Smart Business Practice and Customer Loyalty

A business leaks expanses with unused capacity, empty seats and material sitting on shelves. However, a business can increase profit thru a Time Bank Credit discount. Discounted sales will bring in income for those carrying capacity expenses. There is no profit for those empty seats and those goods sitting on shelves. Offering a time bank discount will reduce empty seats and excess material. A discount to bring in customers is much better than no discount and no customers. It’s a smart business practice with increased customer loyalty.

A business message: Time-In & Time-Out.

People doing community service work for Time Bank Credits are doing ‘Time-In” tasks or projects.

While business and social agency locations that accept Time Bank Credits are ‘Time-Out” spots.  It’s through working together in a Time Bank service exchange that, will help people and organizations meet their goals. see Connected Localism

Are there any other Time-Out spots in your community? Are there any stores or restaurants who would consider providing Time Bank members discount rates. See trading with time credits, click here, now that’s smart business. If you are interested click this link.

Connected Localism

Very Small Local-Connections 2013-10-15
“Local authorities need to pursue not only stronger communities in themselves, but brighter opportunities for the individuals that comprise them….Connected Localism is not proposed as either a political ideology or a public management method, but as a way of thinking and doing that builds on the creativity and civic energy of local people.” from the Local Democracy Think Tank

Dear Colleagues,

Time Bank needs you. Will you help to increase the number of skills and services cataloged  in the Mahoning Valley Time Bank data base? Person to person conversations are great to tell people about the Time Bank and increase members. Weaving connections among friends and associates in a skill archive data base is actively, engaging and building a mutual support system. Face to face is the first step to organizations being engaged.

Yet, another efficient outreach is encouraging different organizations (See above graph) to use the service exchange on line data base. It’s through working together that will help people and organizations meet their goals.

All In This Together, Background and Context:

Here’s how you can help with  “all in this together”  outreach efforts, for example, send this page to everyone that you know living or working in the Mahoning Valley. Please use the social media buttons on the bottom of the page. Message your Facebook time line, your email associates, and anyone that you know that could benefit by joining our Time Bank? Lets get the word out!

Dr. Edgar Cahn, founder of TimebanksUSA, is making a special visit to Kent on Saturday, June 29, to meet with members of the bustling Kent Community Timebank, other regional timebank leaders and area residents interested in learning about the alternative currency system that’s sweeping the nation.

The free public event – sponsored by KCTB and the Kent State University Department of Sociology – will  be held at the United Church of Christ, 1400 E. Main St. in Kent. At 4 p.m. Cahn and his wife, Dr. Christine Gray, will kick off a give-and-take exploration of timebanking with audience members. A potluck dinner will follow at 5:30 p.m.

Abby Greer, executive director of the 500-plus member KCTB,  said she is both thrilled and humbled that Cahn – often referred to as “The Father of Timebanking” – and Gray are coming Kent.

“To have Edgar and Chris take notice of our timebank means they see we are living the dream that he created,” Greer said. “For three years everyone has heard me speak passionately about the benefits of timebanking.  It’s time to hear it from someone else – and, if it’s going to be someone else, why not the guy who wrote the book?”

Greer is referring to Cahn’s 1992 book “Time Dollars,” which inspired her in 2010 to found the Kent timebank. Since then, Greer has introduced more than 500 Kent-area residents to the system where members can share and receive services, skills and goods for the currency of time – and everyone’s time is valued equally.

“While Edgar Cahn did not create the concept of timebanking, he did, in his book, explain how humans are designed to share resources and how we seem to have completely forgotten that the power of community cannot be matched by the aspirations of personal wealth,” she explained.

Greer theorizes that KCTB is one of the nation’s top five most-successful timebanks – based not on membership numbers, as there are several U.S. timebanks with more than 700 members, but activity levels.

“I don’t have data to back that up but, from what I see over social media, our timebank is the most active, the most vibrant and making the most exchanges on a daily basis,” Greer said.

But she does have these facts to back up KCTB’s activity level:

  • As of today KCTB has 509 members who hail from Kent and 12 other area towns. Among those members are 16 non-profit organizations and eight businesses.
  • In the past three years, KCTB members have made 6,645 exchanges totaling 17,310 hours (or time credits).
  • In May 2013 along, KCTB members made 455 exchanges totaling 1141.75 hours (or time credits).  That works out to about 14.4 exchanges and almost 37 hours (or time credits) each day in May.
  • KCTB has spawned the creation of the ever-growing Twinsburg Community Timebank, a hub of KCTB.
  • KCTB has created hOUR Share, a shop located at 223 N. Water St. in Kent that is believed to be the nation’s only alternative currency storefront

Starting a Time Bank

Often I’m asked to mentor a new Time Bank somewhere is the USA and what follows is the core information packet that  I send to a new Coordinator to get them rolling. I’m sending this to you because you picked up on this so fast and I want you to have all the information.

Of course you should read through all the site pages at Time Bank Mahoning Watershed for a good foundational introduction.

In these sites at Time Banks Work there are practical suggestions and many files to consider in a Time Bank effort.
Just skim this archive, as it would be helpful down the road.

Again in the above site there is a section that focuses on Starting a Time Bank (Section 1 and Section 2) This is a must to read and follow up reading all the hyper links in the both article sections.

Also you should adsorb the general ideas at the hOurWorld web site, in particular this page on first steps.
Another point of view, rather more practical, but good none the less.

And You will probably pick up a lot of learning take aways by participating
in the action on a Time Bank Coordinators group on Facebook;

Okay that’s it, please contact me for anything except a Federal money loan LOL.

Time Banks for small businesses

Hi Tony! Do you know much about legal/tax issues for small (sole proprietor) businesses participating in time banks? Are any Mahoning Valley businesses doing this, to your knowledge? Thanks!
Liz

Hi Elizabeth,
Please know that I’m not a lawyer. The founder of TimeBanks USA is a lawyer and his writing is here: http://actionhub.timebanks.org/content/tax-issues

Basically the rule is that community service non-paid work time is documented as a time credit in an account when non-paid community service work is performed. There is no relation of any time unit to any Federal money unit so there is no tax.

Time Bank Mahoning Watershed is a 501 c(3), see our purpose at https://tbmw.org/about-tbmw/timebank-mahoning-watershed-our-vision-mission-values-statement

There is no fee and or no requirement to use our data base program. We do ask for yearly in kind work services or financial contributions from participating individuals, groups, for-profits and non-profits. Currently there are no Mahoning Valley business in our time bank. I love to talk about Time Banking,  See https://tbmw.org/contact-us/schedule-a-timebank-presentation-with-your-group-program-or-organization

Hope that the above helps,
Best Wishes,
TonyBudak@TBMW.org
